First – How Septic Drainfields Work
In order to understand your options, understanding how a septic system drain field works can be helpful. Drainfields, sometimes referred to as leach fields are used to remove impurities from waste water after they have been passed through the septic systems tanks. After waste water passes through a septic systems tank(s), waste water is distributed though a series of perforated pipes in the drainfield. These perforated pipes allow the waste water to escape a few, to several feet underground being filtered through sand and gravel placed initially by the septic system contractor. This combination of sand and gravel filters the water water of impurities, which then allows the water to be returned to the water table tens of feet below the surface.

The first option is fairly obvious, and if you’re here you’ve probably already been told you need to have your septic system drain field replaced, but that is not always the case, and in our experience replacement of the drain field is always the last resort, as it’s the most expensive.
What is happening with your septic drainfield?
If your experiencing ground level saturation, unfortunately this is a tell-tale sign that your septic field can not accept anymore waste water for filtration. In many cases, this does point to having to relocate or restore your septic drainfield.
If your ground level soil is not saturated, this can point to clogs in your drainfields perforated piping. This is actually much better news than the above scenario as many times to points to the very real possibility that your drain tubes are clogged. When these drain tubes are clogged, waste water has a hard time getting to the filtering process, and as a result the entire septic system can backup because of this failure. These septicfield drain tubes can become clogged from many different items. Age of the septic system, misuse of the system such as overuse of garbage disposals, or toilet paper not designed for septic systems are often culprits.
Blockages caused by line breaks, deteriorated piping, or even plugged holes in the piping caused by soil and sand can be other causes for septic system backups.
